Chapter 2 - The Erased Evidence.

I stared at the dark screen of my phone as Ryan’s cruel message fully sank in.

He had planned this disgusting betrayal perfectly.

He wanted to make sure there was absolutely no digital proof of his affair happening under our own roof.

Unfortunately for him, he had not planned on me fighting back and throwing him out into the cold.

I picked up Sophie and carried her upstairs to her quiet bedroom.

I locked her door and sat beside her on the bed until her terrified sobbing finally stopped.

I told her she was the bravest little girl in the world for standing up for me.

Once she fell asleep, I went into my home office and opened my laptop.

I logged into our joint bank accounts to transfer my savings into a private, secure location.

The screen loaded, but the available balance flashed a bright, mocking zero.

Ryan had completely drained our life savings while I was on my business trip.

He had stolen over two hundred thousand dollars of the money I had worked for years to earn.

Panic clawed at my throat, but I forced myself to remain calm and think strategically.

I needed a ruthless divorce lawyer immediately.

I called my college best friend, Sarah, who ran one of the top family law firms in the city.

She answered on the first ring despite it being past midnight.

I told her everything about the affair, the violent slap, and the stolen money.

Sarah promised to meet me at my house first thing in the morning with emergency custody papers.

I spent the rest of the night packing a bag for Sophie and securing all the doors.

When the sun finally rose, a loud, aggressive pounding echoed through the house again.

I looked through the peephole, expecting to see Sarah.

Instead, two uniformed police officers were standing on my front porch.

I cautiously opened the door, keeping the heavy chain lock engaged.

The taller officer looked at me with a stern, unforgiving expression.

"Ma'am, we have received an emergency call regarding child abuse," he stated coldly.

My heart dropped into my stomach as I realized exactly what Ryan had done.

"Your husband claims you violently attacked him and his colleague in a manic rage," the officer continued.

He pulled a piece of paper from his pocket and held it up to the glass.

"We have an emergency court order granting Ryan temporary physical custody of your daughter due to your violent behavior."
