Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The heavy scent of gasoline completely overwhelmed my senses the second I stepped through the splintered front door.

The beautiful, elegant living room I had meticulously decorated was completely soaked in toxic, flammable fluid.

Every single piece of furniture, every family photograph, and the custom leather sofa were ruined beyond repair.

I walked slowly up the grand wooden staircase, my heart pounding violently against my ribs with every terrifying step.

I reached the open doorway of the master bedroom, keeping my hands completely visible and entirely empty.

Rebecca was standing in the center of the room, her elegant pearl necklace completely contrasting her disheveled, crazed appearance.

She was pressing the hunting rifle aggressively against Ryan’s head, while holding a silver Zippo lighter in her other hand.

Ryan was sitting on the edge of the bed, sobbing uncontrollably, his face completely pale with absolute terror.

"You really came back for him," Rebecca sneered, her voice dripping with pure, unadulterated venom.

"You always were a pathetic, weak-hearted little fool, Mariana."

"Let him go, Rebecca," I commanded evenly, refusing to show her a single ounce of fear or intimidation.

"He does not know the truth about what you did to my family, he is completely innocent in this."

Rebecca threw her head back and laughed, a shrill, terrifying sound that aggressively echoed off the bedroom walls.

"Innocent?" Rebecca shrieked, pressing the rifle barrel so hard against Ryan's head that he whimpered in pain.

"Ryan has known exactly who you were for the last five years, Mariana."

The room went completely, suffocatingly silent as her words violently slammed into my chest like a physical blow.

I looked at Ryan, desperately expecting him to deny the horrific accusation, to scream that his mother was lying.

But Ryan just lowered his eyes, completely unable to meet my gaze, confirming his absolute, devastating guilt.

"He found my hidden journals in the attic five years ago," Rebecca confessed proudly, enjoying my total devastation.

"He knew you were the sole heir to the Sterling empire, and he completely agreed to help me keep you hidden."

"We just needed you to have a baby, so we could claim a massive piece of the Sterling fortune through the child."

"But since you were completely barren, we decided to simply replace you with a woman who could actually breed."

My entire body began to shake, not from fear, but from a dark, consuming, and absolute rage.

The eleven years of fertility treatments, the emotional abuse, the cruel, heartbreaking comments about my inability to conceive.

They had intentionally broken my spirit, completely manipulated my mind, and stolen my entire identity for money.

"You are both absolutely repulsive monsters," I whispered coldly, feeling the last shred of my former self completely die.

I slowly reached into the pocket of my coat and pulled out the positive pregnancy test I had taken that morning.

I casually tossed the small plastic stick onto the gasoline-soaked carpet right at Rebecca's expensive shoes.

"I am perfectly capable of having children, Rebecca," I announced with absolute, chilling triumph.

"I am completely pregnant right now, and the baby belongs to the Sterling bloodline."

"And you are never, ever going to see a single penny of my family's money."

Rebecca stared at the positive test in absolute, paralyzing shock, completely distracted by her own catastrophic failure.

It was exactly the distraction I needed.

I did not run away, I did not scream for the police, and I did not beg for my life.

I lunged forward with explosive speed, violently grabbing the hot barrel of the hunting rifle with both bare hands.
