Chapter 2 - The Eviction

The interior of Arthur Sterling's luxury SUV smelled of expensive leather and quiet, absolute power.

I sat frozen in the passenger seat, completely unable to process the magnitude of the phone call he had just made.

"Did you just say you are buying my husband's mortgage?" I asked, my voice barely above a terrified whisper.

Arthur merged smoothly onto the main avenue, his expression completely calm and unbothered.

"Ryan Montgomery works as a mid-level financial analyst at a firm my company actually acquired three months ago," Arthur explained smoothly.

"His house is heavily mortgaged, and he recently took out a massive secondary loan to finance his lavish new lifestyle."

Arthur glanced at me, a cold, calculating smile playing on his lips.

"He thinks he has won, Mariana, but he is currently standing in a house he does not actually own."

We drove in silence for thirty minutes until we reached a towering, glass-fronted skyscraper in the heart of the financial district.

Arthur personally escorted me up to the luxurious penthouse suite, bypassing the busy reception area entirely.

He ordered his personal assistant to bring me a hot meal, a cup of chamomile tea, and a comfortable blanket.

"Rest here for a while," Arthur told me gently. "I have a few very important phone calls to make."

I sat on the plush velvet sofa, staring blankly at the breathtaking panoramic view of the sprawling city below.

For the first time in eleven years, I felt a strange, terrifying spark of hope igniting in my shattered chest.

Exactly two hours later, Arthur walked back into the private suite, holding a thick, legally binding folder.

"It is done," Arthur announced, tossing the heavy folder onto the glass coffee table in front of me.

"As of ten minutes ago, Sterling Enterprises is the sole proprietor of the Montgomery residence."

I looked at the documents, my hands trembling as I read Ryan's forged signature on a desperate loan application.

"He lied on his secondary loan application, claiming he was single and unencumbered," Arthur pointed out grimly.

"That constitutes federal bank fraud, which gives the holding company the immediate right to foreclose without notice."

Arthur handed me a small, encrypted black cell phone.

"I want you to call your mother-in-law, Rebecca, right now," Arthur instructed with a dangerous glint in his eye.

"Tell her to look out the front window of her precious, stolen house."

I dialed Rebecca's number with trembling fingers, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

She answered on the second ring, her voice dripping with venomous, arrogant condescension.

"I thought I told you not to make a scene, Mariana," Rebecca snapped. "We are busy celebrating."

"Go look out the front window, Rebecca," I replied, my voice remarkably steady and cold.

There was a long pause, followed by the sound of high heels aggressively clicking across the hardwood floor.

Then, I heard Rebecca let out a sudden, terrified gasp that made my blood run completely cold.

"What is the meaning of this?" Rebecca shrieked hysterically into the phone.

"Why are there six heavily armed private security contractors chaining our front gates shut?"
