Chapter 4 - The Confession

The entire executive floor went completely, suffocatingly silent as Arthur's words hung heavily in the air.

Vanessa’s arrogant sneer instantly vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated terror.

Ryan slowly turned his head to look at his beautiful, younger mistress, his eyes wide with profound confusion.

"What offshore account is he talking about, Vanessa?" Ryan demanded, his voice cracking violently under the pressure.

Vanessa took a frantic step backward, her perfectly manicured hands trembling as she clutched her expensive designer purse.

"He is lying, Ryan, it is a pathetic trick to ruin our happiness," Vanessa stammered desperately, refusing to make eye contact.

Arthur did not argue with her; he simply pressed the play button on the small silver audio recorder.

Vanessa’s unmistakable voice echoed clearly from the device, discussing wire transfers and hidden corporate routing numbers with a sleazy offshore banker.

"Make sure the two hundred thousand dollars is completely untraceable," Vanessa's recorded voice commanded ruthlessly.

"Ryan is too stupid to notice the missing funds before we finalize the divorce settlement with his barren wife."

Ryan stumbled backward as if he had just been physically punched directly in the chest.

The woman he had completely destroyed our eleven-year marriage for had been methodically robbing him blind the entire time.

"You stole from me?" Ryan whispered, staring at Vanessa with absolute, devastating heartbreak.

"You were just a stepping stone, Ryan," Vanessa sneered, dropping her sweet facade entirely to reveal the monster beneath.

"Did you honestly think I wanted to play stepmother to whatever brat you eventually decided to adopt?"

Vanessa aggressively shoved past a stunned junior analyst and sprinted toward the emergency stairwell, desperate to escape.

Arthur simply raised a single finger, and two massive corporate security guards immediately blocked her only exit.

"The police are waiting for you in the lobby, Miss Carter," Arthur announced with absolute, chilling calm.

Ryan fell heavily to his knees in the middle of the office floor, completely broken, humiliated, and financially ruined.

He finally looked up at me, his eyes filled with a pathetic, desperate realization of what he had thrown away.

"Mariana, please," Ryan begged, crawling pathetically toward my feet while his former colleagues watched in disgust.

"I was completely manipulated, she tricked me into leaving you."

"We can fix this, we can go home and try to save our marriage."

I looked down at the man I had loved for over a decade, feeling absolutely nothing but cold, hollow pity.

"We don't have a home anymore, Ryan, because your fraudulent loan just cost you the house," I stated firmly.

I gently placed my hand protectively over my still-flat stomach, knowing the secret I carried was entirely mine now.

"And as for saving our marriage, my lawyer will be sending you the divorce papers first thing tomorrow morning."

I turned my back on him and walked toward the glass elevator with Arthur, leaving Ryan completely shattered on the floor.

But just as the elevator doors began to close, a frantic receptionist burst through the glass doors of the lobby.

"Mr. Sterling," the receptionist shouted, completely out of breath and holding a flashing red phone.

"There is an emergency call for you from the private hospital downtown."

Arthur took the phone, his calm demeanor instantly shattering as he listened to the voice on the other end.

"What is it, Arthur?" I asked, suddenly terrified by the pale, shocked expression on his face.

"It is my wife," Arthur whispered, dropping the phone completely onto the floor.

"She just woke up from a twenty-year coma, and she is demanding to see her daughter."
