Chapter 5 - The Awakening

The glass elevator felt suffocatingly small as Arthur and I rapidly descended to the ground floor.

Arthur’s hands, which had been so steady and commanding moments ago, were now visibly trembling.

"Twenty years," Arthur muttered, staring blankly at the metal doors as if trying to comprehend an absolute miracle.

"The doctors swore her brain activity would never recover from the terrible accident that killed our daughter."

I remained completely silent, respecting the profound magnitude of the personal trauma he was currently experiencing.

We rushed out of the skyscraper and climbed quickly into the waiting SUV, speeding aggressively toward the downtown medical center.

The private hospital wing was completely empty, heavily guarded by Arthur's elite, personal security detail.

We practically sprinted down the sterile white corridor toward the high-security intensive care unit.

A team of bewildered neurologists was standing outside the heavy wooden door, reviewing a stack of medical charts.

"Mr. Sterling, this is medically unprecedented," the lead doctor stated, looking completely shocked.

"Your wife is fully lucid, speaking clearly, and she has perfect memory recall of the day before the accident."

Arthur did not wait for further medical explanation; he pushed past the doctors and threw the door open.

I hesitated in the hallway, feeling like an absolute intruder in a profoundly private family moment.

But Arthur reached back, grabbed my hand firmly, and gently pulled me into the dimly lit hospital room with him.

An older woman with fragile, porcelain skin and silver hair was sitting up in the hospital bed.

Her eyes, the exact same piercing blue as Arthur's, widened in absolute shock when she saw me standing in the doorway.

"Eleanor, my love," Arthur cried softly, rushing to the side of the bed to hold her frail hand.

Eleanor did not look at her husband of forty years; her eyes were locked entirely on my face.

"You brought her back to me," Eleanor whispered, her voice incredibly weak but filled with absolute, devastating emotion.

"You found our beautiful daughter."

Arthur’s heart completely broke, and he gently stroked his wife's pale, trembling cheek.

"Eleanor, sweetheart, this is Mariana," Arthur explained softly, his voice thick with unshed tears.

"Our daughter passed away in the accident, remember? This young woman just happens to look remarkably like her."

Eleanor aggressively shook her head, rejecting his logical explanation with fierce, maternal certainty.

"No, Arthur, you do not understand what actually happened that night," Eleanor gasped, clutching his hand tightly.

"The baby did not die in the car crash."

The entire room went completely, terrifyingly silent.

"What are you saying, Eleanor?" Arthur demanded, his protective demeanor completely shattering into absolute panic.

Eleanor pointed a shaking, fragile finger directly at me, tears streaming rapidly down her pale face.

"I was not the one driving the car that night, Arthur," Eleanor confessed, revealing a secret buried for two decades.

"My jealous sister, Rebecca, forced my car off the road and stole my newborn baby from the wreckage."

My entire world violently stopped spinning as the horrific name registered in my shocked brain.

She was the monster who had kidnapped me from a burning car twenty-five years ago.
