Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Secret

I stared at Vance in absolute shock, my mind struggling to process his words.
"What do you mean she isn't my mother?" I asked, my voice trembling.
"Your father adopted you to protect you from the syndicate," Vance explained rapidly.
"The offshore trust isn't just money, it holds the digital evidence to destroy Evelyn's entire criminal network."
"The vault requires the biometric blood signature of your true, biological mother."
I felt my entire reality fracturing into a million pieces.
"Then who is my real mother?" I demanded.
"That is a secret we will uncover later, right now we have to save Helen," Vance replied.
He expertly maneuvered the heavy truck through the dark city streets, evading our pursuers.
We pulled into the underground parking garage of the hospital and rushed toward the elevators.
We reached the fourth floor and sprinted down the quiet, sterile hallway to Helen's room.
I pushed the door open, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.
The hospital bed was completely empty, the IV line ripped carelessly from the monitor.
Vance cursed under his breath, raising his rifle as he checked the bathroom.
The television in the corner of the room suddenly flickered to life on its own.

Garrett's bruised and bloody face appeared on the screen, standing in the living room of my childhood home.
He was holding a massive hunting knife directly against Helen's throat.
