Chapter 6 - The Mysterious Protector

I dropped the phone, the plastic receiver dangling by its metal cord.
Evelyn had already gotten to my only remaining ally.
I was completely alone in a deadly game I barely understood.
I ran out of the gas station, scanning the empty, rain-slicked highway in sheer panic.
A sleek black truck suddenly pulled into the parking lot, its headlights blinding me.
The tires screeched to a halt mere inches from where I stood.
The driver's side door flew open.
A tall, rugged man with intense green eyes stepped out, holding an assault rifle.
"Get in the truck if you want to survive the next ten minutes, Clara," he ordered.
"Who are you?" I demanded, aiming Garrett's stolen pistol directly at his chest.
The man didn't even flinch at the sight of my weapon.
"My name is Vance, and your father hired me to protect you five years ago," he said calmly.
I lowered the gun slightly, studying his hardened, serious face.
"Evelyn's cartel mercenaries are three miles away and closing in on this location," Vance warned.
He grabbed my arm and practically threw me into the passenger seat.
He slammed the gas pedal, tearing back onto the highway just as three black vans swarmed the gas station behind us.
"We have to go to the hospital," I yelled over the roaring engine.
"My mother is completely defenseless in there."
May you like
Vance shook his head, his grip tightening on the steering wheel.
"Helen is not your biological mother, Clara, and her blood cannot open the final vault."
