Chapter 5 - The Lone Survivor

The world spun violently as the vehicle tumbled down the steep embankment.

Airbags deployed with a deafening crack, filling the cabin with white smoke.

The SUV finally slammed into a massive oak tree and came to a crushing halt.

I gasped for air, my entire body aching, but miraculously unbroken.

I unbuckled my seatbelt and looked over at the driver's seat.

Garrett was slumped over the steering wheel, completely unconscious with a deep cut on his forehead.

I didn't waste a single second.

I reached across his chest, grabbed the loaded gun, and shoved it into my jacket.

I kicked my shattered door open and crawled out into the freezing rain.

I scrambled up the muddy hill, desperate to reach the main highway.

I ran for twenty minutes until I saw the flickering neon lights of an old gas station.

I rushed inside and threw a crumpled twenty-dollar bill at the confused cashier.

I grabbed the dirty payphone off the wall and dialed my family lawyer's private cell number.

He was the only man who knew the truth about the offshore trust.

The phone rang three times before someone finally picked up.

"Mr. Davis, please, you have to help me," I begged into the receiver.

A soft, cruel chuckle echoed through the earpiece.

"Mr. Davis is currently bleeding on his expensive carpet, Clara," Evelyn's voice whispered back.
