Chapter 8 - The Hostage Negotiation

I stared at the federal agent in absolute disbelief as she walked toward me with the steel handcuffs.

"What are you talking about? Brenda crashed her own car on the highway last night!" I shouted defensively.

The agent forcefully grabbed my wrists and locked the cold metal cuffs tightly in place.

She pulled up a fresh crime scene photo on her computer monitor and turned it so I could see.

The photo showed Brenda lying dead in the driver's seat of her wrecked SUV, but she did not die from the crash.

She had a single, perfectly placed bullet hole directly in the center of her forehead.

The agent explained that ballistics matched the bullet to a handgun registered in my name.

Mark had not just planned the insurance fraud; he had actively framed me for murdering his own mother.

He must have stolen my registered weapon from the home safe and executed Brenda after we escaped the highway.

He tied up every single loose end and pinned the entire bloody mess perfectly on my shoulders.

David jumped out of his chair and began yelling at the agent, demanding she look at the evidence of Mark's insanity.

The agent ignored my brother completely and ordered two armed guards to escort me to a federal holding cell.

I was locked in a tiny, windowless concrete room with absolutely no way to contact the outside world.

I sat on the cold metal bench and cried for Harper, wondering if she was still fighting for her life in the hospital.

Hours passed in pure agony until the heavy steel door of my cell suddenly swung open.

The stern female agent walked in, but this time she did not look angry or suspicious.

She looked completely pale, holding a cell phone with a live video feed glowing on the screen.

"Your husband managed to escape the warehouse before our tactical team arrived," the agent whispered grimly.

She turned the phone screen around, and my heart completely stopped beating in my chest.

Mark was standing inside the intensive care unit of the hospital, holding a scalpel to a nurse's throat.

The background showed Harper's hospital bed, with all the vital monitors blinking furiously.

Mark was demanding that the FBI release me and bring me directly to the hospital for a hostage exchange.

He wanted to execute me in front of the police to complete his twisted narrative of the unstable, murderous wife.

The agent unlocked my handcuffs and told me the tactical team had no choice but to comply with his demands.

They strapped a hidden Kevlar vest under my shirt and placed a tiny microphone inside my collar.

I was loaded into an armored police transport vehicle and rushed through the city streets with screaming sirens.

We arrived at the hospital, which was completely surrounded by dozens of SWAT officers and news vans.

I walked through the sliding glass doors, entirely prepared to trade my own life to save my beautiful daughter.

I took a deep breath and stepped into the intensive care unit, where Mark was waiting with a manic, terrifying smile.

He pushed the terrified nurse away and pointed a stolen police revolver directly at my forehead.

Before Mark could utter a single word of his villainous monologue, the heart monitor connected to Harper began to emit a long, continuous, deafening flatline tone.
