Chapter 1 - The Hidden Voice

The audio crackled loudly through the tablet speaker as my brother turned the volume all the way up.

The second voice in the pantry did not belong to a stranger.

It belonged to my mother-in-law, Brenda.

"Make sure she drinks every last drop, Lauren," Brenda’s cold voice echoed clearly from the recorded video.

The entire kitchen went completely dead silent as the guests processed what they had just heard.

My husband, Mark, froze with his hands still resting gently on our daughter's chest.

Brenda was standing right next to the refrigerator holding a stack of dirty dessert plates.

Her face turned entirely pale as every single person in the room turned to stare at her.

The fancy birthday decorations suddenly felt like the backdrop to a horrific crime scene.

Harper let out a weak, rattling gasp for air that snapped me back to reality.

"Where is the ambulance?" Mark screamed, his usual calm demeanor finally shattering.

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as the flashing red lights illuminated our living room windows.

I knelt beside my little girl, gently stroking her hair and praying she would hold on just a little longer.

Lauren backed away from the kitchen island, her hands shaking wildly as she realized she was trapped.

"It was just supposed to be a little joke to prove Sarah is a paranoid mother," Brenda stammered weakly.

I stood up and took a step toward the woman who had just poisoned my six-year-old child.

Before I could even speak, two paramedics burst through the front door with a medical stretcher.

They immediately took over, administering oxygen and lifting Harper onto the portable bed.

Mark grabbed his keys and told me he was going to ride in the back of the ambulance with them.

He ordered me to stay behind, give the video to the police, and make sure those two women did not leave.

I watched with a broken heart as they wheeled my precious daughter out into the dark night.

Three local police officers walked through the door just seconds after the ambulance sped away.

They asked who was in charge of the residence and what had happened to the child.

I pointed a shaking finger directly at Lauren and Brenda standing frozen by the counter.

"They deliberately poisoned my daughter with almond extract, and I have the video to prove it," I stated clearly.

The lead officer pulled out his notepad and asked me to hand over the tablet.

I turned around to grab the device from the kitchen island where my brother had just placed it.

The tablet was completely gone.

I frantically scanned the countertops, looking under napkins and behind the empty punch bowl.

My brother, David, checked his pockets and swore he had left it right there on the granite surface.

Lauren suddenly burst into fake, hysterical tears and pointed a trembling finger directly at me.

"Sarah is lying because she gave the nuts to Harper herself to get attention!" Lauren shrieked.

The lead officer frowned deeply and placed his hand on his service weapon.

My cell phone buzzed in my pocket, and I pulled it out to see a notification from our home security app.

The bold red text on the screen read that the entire video archive had just been permanently deleted by an authorized user.
