Chapter 2 - The Missing Evidence

I stared at my phone screen in absolute disbelief as the deletion confirmation blinked at me.

Only two people in the world had the master password to wipe the cloud server entirely.

One was me, and the other was my husband.

The police officer took a step closer to me, his eyes narrowing with deep suspicion.

"Ma'am, I am going to need you to produce this video you claim proves your sister poisoned the child," he demanded.

I frantically tapped the screen of my phone, desperately trying to recover the deleted files from the trash bin.

The digital folder was completely empty.

"Someone just wiped the security system remotely," I stuttered, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

Brenda let out a dramatic gasp and clutched her pearl necklace as if she were deeply offended.

"Officer, my daughter-in-law has suffered from severe mental instability for years," Brenda lied smoothly.

I wanted to lunge across the room and slap the deceitful expression right off her face.

David stepped between me and the police officers, holding his hands up to de-escalate the tension.

"I saw the video with my own eyes, officer, they put almond extract in the girl's cup," David insisted.

Lauren shook her head and wiped away her fake crocodile tears with the back of her sleeve.

"David will say anything to protect his crazy sister," Lauren sobbed to the sympathetic cops.

The lead officer asked me to hand over my cell phone so their tech department could verify the deletion logs.

I hesitated for a fraction of a second, knowing my phone contained all my personal banking and work files.

The officer viewed my hesitation as a sign of guilt and unclipped the handcuffs from his heavy belt.

"Sarah, I think it is best if you come down to the station with us right now to clear this up," he said sternly.

I panicked because Harper was currently fighting for her life in a hospital bed without me.

I told the officer I needed to go to the hospital immediately to be with my dying child.

He firmly grabbed my arm and told me I was not going anywhere until the investigation was complete.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the backyard patio, shattering the tense silence in the kitchen.

Everyone turned their heads toward the sliding glass doors as the sound of breaking glass filled the air.

David used the sudden distraction to shove the police officer backward just enough to break his grip on my arm.

"Run to the hospital, Sarah, I will handle this!" my brother shouted at the top of his lungs.

I did not waste a single second thinking about the legal consequences of fleeing the scene.

I sprinted out the front door, jumped into my car, and slammed my foot onto the gas pedal.

I drove recklessly through the quiet suburban streets, praying I would not see flashing lights in my rearview mirror.

I finally pulled into the emergency room parking lot and ran through the sliding automatic doors.

I found Mark sitting in the waiting area with his face buried in his hands, completely covered in tears.

I rushed over to him and asked if our beautiful baby girl was going to survive this nightmare.

Mark looked up at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred that chilled me to the bone.

He stood up, pulled a sealed plastic evidence bag out of his jacket pocket, and shoved it against my chest.

Inside the clear bag was the exact same red-lidded jar of almond extract we had seen on the video.

"The paramedics found this hidden inside your purse when they moved it to get the stretcher," Mark whispered coldly.
