Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Julian ordered us to drop our weapons immediately, his voice completely devoid of any human emotion.
Marcus slowly lowered his pistol, realizing that any sudden movement would result in a massacre.
The syndicate guards swarmed us, kicking our weapons away and forcing us to our knees on the cold concrete.
Julian walked slowly down the stairs, his expensive designer shoes echoing loudly in the stairwell.
He looked at me with pure disgust, complaining about how much trouble I had caused his new business venture.
He proudly admitted that he had orchestrated this entire scheme because my inherited wealth wasn't enough to satisfy his ambitions.
He needed the ultimate leverage to join the Volkov syndicate, and a healthy newborn was their most prized commodity.
I clutched Maya tighter, spitting directly onto Julian's polished shoes in a final act of defiance.
Julian laughed, wiping his shoe on the back of my jacket before signaling his lead guard.
The guard stepped forward and brutally struck Marcus in the back of the head with his rifle butt.
Marcus collapsed onto the floor, completely unconscious and bleeding heavily from his temple.
Julian then reached out, violently ripping my crying baby from my arms despite my desperate, agonizing screams.
He handed Maya over to a terrifying man in a pristine white lab coat who had just entered the room.
The doctor nodded silently and turned to walk back toward the sterile operating theater.
I fought like a wild animal, biting and scratching at the guards who were pinning me to the floor.
Julian leaned in close, whispering that he would make sure I watched the entire surgical procedure.
Suddenly, the deafening sound of a massive explosion rocked the entire underground facility.
The concrete ceiling cracked, sending a shower of heavy dust and debris raining down onto the guards.
The heavy blast door we had entered through was completely blown off its steel hinges.

Stepping through the smoke and fire was Julian's mother, Patricia, holding a military-grade grenade launcher.
She aimed the weapon directly at her own son's chest and told him to let her granddaughter go.
