Chapter 4 - The Reluctant Ally

The metallic click of the gun's safety disengaging echoed loudly in the quiet office.
I slowly raised my hands, my heart hammering violently against my ribcage.
The dark figure stepped into the moonlight filtering through the large glass windows.
It was Marcus, Julian's notoriously ruthless business partner and the co-founder of their tech firm.
Marcus lowered the weapon slightly, looking at the life insurance documents clutched in my shaking hands.
He asked me in a harsh whisper what I was doing inside a crime scene.
I told him everything, from the recorded phone call to the kidnapped baby and the stolen trust fund.
Marcus listened silently, his jaw clenching tighter with every horrifying detail I revealed.
When I finished speaking, he didn't call the police or pull the trigger.
Instead, he holstered his weapon and let out a long, exhausted sigh.
He confessed that Julian had stolen over fifteen million dollars from the company's operating account.
Marcus had come to the office to confront Julian, only to find the place completely abandoned.
He realized that Julian was planning to frame both of us for his massive corporate embezzlement.
Marcus told me that if we went to the authorities now, we would both be arrested as his accomplices.
We had to find Julian, recover the stolen funds, and save my daughter before the FBI caught wind of the missing money.
I agreed to the alliance, knowing I had absolutely no other choice.
Marcus walked over to Julian's desk and pulled out a hidden encrypted hard drive taped beneath the drawer.
He plugged it into his laptop, rapidly typing in a sequence of override commands.
The screen flashed green, revealing a live GPS tracking beacon.
Marcus explained that he had secretly planted a tracker on Julian's black sedan weeks ago when he first suspected the theft.
The red dot on the map was stationary, located at a deserted shipping yard near the city harbor.
We sprinted out of the office and jumped into Marcus's armored tactical vehicle.
He drove recklessly through the empty city streets, running multiple red lights in his desperation.
We arrived at the shipping yard just as a massive cargo helicopter began spinning its rotors.
Julian's black sedan was parked near the landing pad, its doors left wide open.
I jumped out of the moving vehicle, screaming my daughter's name over the deafening roar of the helicopter.

I ran toward the helicopter, but a heavy steel shipping container suddenly blocked my path.
The container doors swung open, revealing four heavily armed mercenaries pointing automatic rifles directly at my chest.
