Chapter 2 - The Empty Bassinet

I screamed at the top of my lungs and chased Julian out into the cold night.
The taillights of his sleek black sedan were already disappearing down the dark suburban street.
My father ran out behind me, pulling his cell phone from his pocket to dial emergency services.
Chloe tried to sneak out through the garage, but my mother grabbed her by the arm and slapped her across the face.
The entire house descended into absolute chaos as the reality of the betrayal set in.
I collapsed onto the wet driveway, weeping uncontrollably as the cold rain began to fall.
The police arrived ten minutes later, their flashing red and blue lights illuminating the neighborhood.
Two officers took my statement, writing down every detail of the recorded phone call and the kidnapping.
But the older officer let out a heavy sigh and delivered a crushing blow to my hopes.
He explained that since Julian was the biological father and there was no formal custody agreement, it was technically not a kidnapping.
They promised to do a welfare check, but they couldn't issue an Amber Alert or arrest him immediately.
I felt a sickening wave of despair wash over me as I realized the law was not on my side.
I walked back into the living room, ignoring the shattered glass and the ruined anniversary dinner.
I picked up my phone and saw a new text message from an unknown encrypted number.
It was a picture of my beautiful baby girl sleeping in a strange, dimly lit room.
The message below the photo stated that if I ever wanted to see Maya again, I had to follow his instructions exactly.
He demanded that I log into my inherited trust fund account and transfer five million dollars to a specific offshore routing number.
I didn't have five million dollars in liquid cash, as the trust was tied up in real estate and mutual funds.
I texted him back, begging him to just bring the baby home and take whatever he wanted.
He replied immediately, telling me that I had exactly twenty-four hours to liquidate the assets.
If I failed to send the money, he promised to board a private flight to a country with no extradition treaty.
I frantically opened my laptop to check the status of my trust fund.

My heart stopped completely when I saw the balance on the screen.
The account was completely empty, and the transaction history showed a massive withdrawal made just three hours ago.
