Chapter 1 - The Anniversary Toast

I cleared my throat, making sure everyone was paying absolute attention to me.
Julian’s mother, Patricia, smiled warmly and raised her own glass of expensive red wine.
She told the entire table that she was so proud of the beautiful family we had built together.
I thanked her sweetly, looking directly into her eyes as I prepared to shatter her illusion.
I announced that I had spent the entire week working on a special surprise for my husband.
I explained that it was a digital audio memory, capturing the true essence of our marriage.
Julian shifted uncomfortably, his fingers tapping anxiously against the expensive mahogany table.
He forced a fake smile, telling me that I shouldn't have gone to so much trouble.
I assured him that it was no trouble at all, pulling a small remote from my dress pocket.
I pressed the central button, instantly connecting to the surround sound system in the living room.
The room filled with the crisp, clear sound of a phone ringing.
Then, the speakers broadcasted Julian’s voice, echoing loudly off the dining room walls.
His recorded voice cruelly complained that I was driving him insane with pictures of our baby.
My father stopped chewing his food, his expression instantly morphing into deep confusion.
The recording continued, broadcasting Julian’s cold admission that he barely touched me anymore.
Julian scrambled to his feet, his chair crashing violently onto the hardwood floor behind him.
He screamed at me to turn the speakers off immediately, his face flushed with panicked anger.
I casually took a sip of my ice water, ignoring his frantic, desperate commands.
He lunged for the main amplifier, ripping the thick power cord violently out of the wall socket.
But the audio seamlessly transitioned to the wireless backup speaker I had hidden inside a decorative vase.
The clear sound of a woman’s breathy, seductive laugh filled the tense silence of the room.
My younger sister, Chloe, went completely pale and dropped her heavy silver fork onto her plate.
The unmistakable sound of her voice admitting her love for my husband played for everyone to hear.
My mother let out a horrified gasp, clutching her chest as she stared at her youngest daughter.
Chloe began to sob uncontrollably, burying her face in her hands in sheer humiliation.
Julian realized he was trapped, his corporate charm completely melting away into a state of primal rage.
He grabbed the heavy brass candleholder from the center of the table and smashed it into the wall.
He shouted that I was crazy, that I had digitally altered the recording to frame him.
Nobody believed him, and my father stood up, balling his hands into tight, protective fists.

Julian didn't wait for my father to attack him.
He quickly spun around, snatched our sleeping newborn out of her bassinet, and bolted out the front door.
