Chapter 3 - The Empty Cradle

The photograph of another woman holding my newborn daughter shattered my remaining sanity.

I sobbed uncontrollably in the passenger seat as my father drove us through the blinding rain.

The next morning, we sat across from one of the most expensive family lawyers in the state.

Mr. Davis reviewed the massive stack of forged financial documents with a grim expression on his face.

"Your husband has executed a highly sophisticated financial sabotage, Clara," the lawyer explained.

"Because the debt is legally in your name, you appear completely financially unstable to the family court."

He warned me that Liam was already filing for emergency full custody, claiming I was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis.

I slammed my hands down on the mahogany desk in pure, unadulterated anger.

"He is a lying cheater, and I need a police escort to go get my baby right now," I demanded.

Mr. Davis sighed heavily and removed his glasses.

"If you go to that house and cause a scene, you will absolutely prove his fake narrative," he warned.

I refused to listen to reason when my daughter was trapped in a house with monsters.

I borrowed my father's car and drove directly to Liam's upscale suburban neighborhood.

I parked a block away and crept quietly through the damp hedges toward my own backyard.

The house was entirely silent, and Liam's expensive sports car was missing from the driveway.

I successfully picked the lock on the back patio door using a trick Liam had foolishly taught me.

I sprinted upstairs to the nursery, my heart soaring with the desperate hope of holding Hailey again.

But when I pushed the nursery door open, the crib was completely empty.

All of her clothes, her toys, and her specialized formula were entirely gone.

I frantically searched the entire house, but there was no trace of my husband or my baby.

Suddenly, the heavy front door opened downstairs, and heavy footsteps echoed in the foyer.

I quickly hid inside the dark bedroom closet, holding my breath in sheer terror.

It wasn't Liam who walked into the bedroom.

It was a man holding a suppressed pistol, and he was actively searching for me.
