Chapter 5 - The Frame Job

My mind raced desperately as I stared at the television screen.
"That's a lie!" I shouted, pointing at the monitor.
"He forged my handwriting to make it look like I did it!"
Agent Harris looked at me, his expression suddenly unreadable and cold.
"Sit back down, Sarah," he commanded sharply.
"You know I didn't write that," I pleaded, feeling the walls closing in.
"We found the torn note in the trash, remember?"
"The note that proved they planned it for the insurance money!"
Agent Harris sighed and crossed his arms over his chest.
"The evidence team processed that note an hour ago," he said slowly.
"The handwriting analysis came back with a perfect match."
He leaned closer to me, his eyes narrowing in suspicion.
"The note wasn't written by your husband, Sarah."
"It was a perfect match for your handwriting."
I felt the blood drain entirely from my face.
They had planned this frame job flawlessly from the very beginning.
They had practiced my handwriting until they could forge it flawlessly to set me up.
"You have to believe me," I cried, tears welling in my eyes.
"What about Mr. Carter?"
"He saw everything in the yard!"
"He saw Mark holding the phone and Eleanor holding the chemical bottle!"
Agent Harris shook his head slowly.
"Mr. Carter is currently in a medically induced coma," he replied.
"Someone broke into his house last night and assaulted him with a blunt object."
My heart shattered into a million pieces.
They had silenced the only witness who could prove my innocence.
"And his cell phone, the one he used to record the incident, is missing," Harris added.
Without the video, I had absolutely no proof.
Two armed federal agents stepped into the room and approached my chair.
"Sarah, I have to place you under arrest for the attempted murder of your daughter," Harris said.
He pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
"No, please, you have to find my baby!" I screamed as they grabbed my wrists.
As the cold metal clicked around my wrists, the television screen abruptly changed.

The live stream cut to a new video, uploaded anonymously from a hidden server.
It was a crystal-clear, high-definition security camera feed from inside my own kitchen.
