Chapter 4 - The Offshore Account

The FBI took over the investigation before the sun even came up.

I sat in a sterile interrogation room, wrapping a thin blanket tightly around my shivering shoulders.

Agent Harris, a tall man with a permanent scowl, slid a folder across the metal table.

"Your mother-in-law is much more dangerous than we realized," he told me.

He opened the folder to reveal dozens of bank statements and wire transfers.

"Eleanor isn't just a bitter old woman."

"She runs a massive offshore fraud syndicate."

I stared at the numbers, completely unable to process the millions of dollars moving through their accounts.

"They needed Lily's life insurance policy to cover a massive debt they owe to a very bad cartel," Harris explained.

"If they don't pay up by tomorrow, the cartel will execute both Mark and Eleanor."

The reality of the situation hit me like a physical blow.

My daughter was nothing but currency to them.

"Where did the helicopter go?" I asked, my voice cracking.

"We tracked it to a private airstrip near the Canadian border," Harris said.

"But they abandoned the chopper and switched to a ground vehicle."

He showed me a satellite photo of a dark SUV driving down a deserted highway.

"We have roadblocks set up across the entire state."

"They are trapped, and it's only a matter of time before we box them in."

I finally felt a tiny sliver of hope ignite in my chest.

Maybe we could actually save her.

Suddenly, the door to the interrogation room burst open.

Another agent rushed in, looking completely panicked.

"Sir, you need to see this right now," the agent gasped.

He turned on the television monitor mounted in the corner of the room.

A local news station was broadcasting a live video feed from a cell phone.

It was Mark, sitting in a dark, unfamiliar room, looking directly into the camera.

"My wife is mentally unstable and has kidnapped our daughter," Mark lied smoothly on the live stream.

"She poisoned Lily, and now she's hiding her."

I gasped, covering my mouth in pure shock.

"He's framing me," I whispered.

Then Mark held up a document to the camera.

"I have a signed confession from Sarah right here," he said with a tragic sigh.

The camera zoomed in on a piece of paper.

It was my handwriting, perfectly forged, detailing exactly how I had forced Lily to drink the cleaner.
