Chapter 10 - The Beach House

Six months later, the ocean breeze felt like a permanent blessing.

Mark and Eleanor had both pleaded guilty to avoid the federal death penalty.

They were securely locked away in separate maximum-security prisons for the rest of their natural lives.

Lily and I lived in a beautiful, sunlit beach house in a quiet coastal town in California.

She was thriving in her new school, making friends, and playing in the sand every afternoon.

The chemical burns in her throat had completely healed, leaving no physical scars.

I had found a wonderful job working from home, allowing me to be with her every single day.

We spent our evenings baking cookies, reading stories, and watching the sunset over the water.

The fear that used to grip my heart had finally faded into a distant memory.

We were truly happy, safe, and entirely free from the monsters of our past.

I tucked Lily into her cozy bed, pulling the soft pink quilt up to her chin.

"I love you to the moon and back," I whispered, kissing her forehead.

"I love you too, Mommy," she smiled sleepily.

I turned on her little starry nightlight and softly closed the bedroom door.

I walked down the hallway toward the kitchen to pour myself a glass of water.

The house was perfectly quiet, filled only with the soothing sound of crashing waves outside.

I opened the wooden cabinet underneath the kitchen sink to grab a fresh sponge.

I froze, the breath completely catching in my throat.

Sitting perfectly centered in the empty cabinet was a brand new, unopened bottle of foaming toilet cleaner.

Taped to the front of the bottle was a small strip of paper.

It was written in my exact handwriting, though I had absolutely no memory of writing it.

It read: "He forced her to drink it, but I gave him the idea."
