Chapter 9 - The Counterstrike

I locked the heavy wooden door of my hotel room and immediately threw the deadbolt.

My hands were finally shaking as I dropped my heavy laptop bag onto the pristine white bed.

Jason wasn't just begging for a financial bailout to save his bruised ego.

He was actively trying to frame me for the massive loan fraud he had committed to fund his double life.

He had the forged documents, the connections to Mark's shady syndicate, and the audacity to paint me as the villain.

If I didn't send the money by midnight, he would destroy my credit, steal my apartment, and have me arrested the moment I stepped foot on American soil.

I walked over to the minibar, poured myself a glass of sparkling water, and forced myself to breathe.

I was thousands of miles away from Brooklyn, but the chains of my marriage were still tightly wrapped around my neck.

I opened my laptop, determined to sever those chains once and for all.

I logged into a secure, encrypted financial network I had set up years ago when I first started handling corporate accounting.

I didn't transfer the stolen money back to Jason's account.

Instead, I initiated a complex series of international wire transfers.

I moved the entire balance of my life savings into an untraceable, high-security offshore account based in Geneva.

I completely wiped my digital footprint from the American banking system, rendering my assets untouchable by Jason, Mark, or any debt collector.

Then, I turned my attention to the digital dossier of evidence I had compiled at the cafe.

I attached the forged mortgage documents, the fake catering invoices, and the proof of Mark's money laundering scheme to a single email.

I didn't send it to the local police or to Jason's desperate family.

I sent the encrypted file directly to a senior financial crimes investigator at the IRS in Washington, D.C.

I added a short, polite note explaining that my husband had stolen my identity to facilitate a corporate fraud ring.

I hit send, watching the progress bar fill up until the screen flashed a green confirmation checkmark.

It was eleven forty-five at night.

I had fifteen minutes left before Jason's ridiculous midnight deadline.

I picked up my phone, unblocked his number for exactly one minute, and typed a final text message.

The money is gone, the IRS has the forged documents, and I am officially filing for divorce in absentia.

I hit send, blocked his number permanently, and tossed the phone onto the nightstand.

I walked into the marble bathroom and splashed cold water on my face.

When I looked in the mirror, I didn't see a terrified, betrayed wife running from her husband's wealthy thugs.

I saw a free woman who had just successfully dismantled her abuser's entire life.

I smiled, turned off the bathroom light, and prepared to sleep peacefully for the first time in my life.

Then, a heavy, authoritative knock echoed against my hotel room door.
