Chapter 3 - The Red Dress

I stopped breathing entirely.
The woman in the red dress lingered in Jason's arms, her hands resting comfortably on his chest.
She possessed the kind of effortless, wealthy elegance that Carol had always demanded I emulate.
Her dark hair cascaded perfectly over her shoulders, and her smile mirrored the exact arrogance of Jason's family.
Carol stood right next to them, beaming with absolute pride as she patted the woman's shoulder.
This wasn't a secret affair happening in the dark corners of a hotel bar.
This was a public display of affection, celebrated and endorsed by his entire family.
I pressed my trembling fingers against the cold metal of my laptop.
Every sacrifice I had ever made for this man flashed before my eyes like a mocking highlight reel.
The vacations I skipped so we could save for a house.
The late nights I spent working double shifts to cover his supposed business debts.
The countless times he told me we needed to be frugal while secretly funneling my income into his family's vanity.
He hadn't just stolen my money to throw a party for his sister.
He was using my life savings to play the role of a wealthy, single bachelor in front of a woman his mother actually approved of.
I gently laid my phone flat on the kitchen table.
I walked slowly into our shared bedroom, the silence of the apartment pressing heavily against my ears.
I opened my banking app, grateful that my hands no longer shook.
Jason always loved calling it our joint account whenever we discussed finances.
Yet ninety percent of the money sitting inside that account had been earned entirely by me.
My salary funded our lifestyle.
My overtime padded our safety net.
My annual bonuses were the only reason we had over one hundred thousand dollars in liquid cash.
Jason had full access simply because I had trusted him with my life.
His family had enjoyed absolute security because I never once questioned why every financial crisis somehow became mine to solve.
I tapped the screen and initiated a massive wire transfer.
I moved every single dollar that legally and rightfully belonged to me into a private, individual account.
I wasn't stealing from him.
I wasn't acting out of blind revenge.
I was simply reclaiming the life I had built with my own two hands.
Then, I opened a new browser tab and searched for international flights.
I typed in Rome.
It was the very city Jason had once laughed at after I admitted it had always been my absolute dream destination.
By sunset, my single leather suitcase was fully packed and waiting by the door.
I packed my passport, my laptop, my financial records, and one framed photograph of my late parents.
Everything else that belonged to Jason remained exactly where he had left it.
I slipped my diamond wedding ring from my finger, feeling a strange sense of physical relief.
I placed it carefully on the nightstand beside our silver-framed wedding photograph.
Then I firmly turned the picture face down against the wood.
As I zipped my coat, my phone chimed with a high-priority alert from my credit monitoring service.
I opened the email, expecting a routine notification about my recent bank transfer.

Instead, it was an alert confirming that a second mortgage of four hundred thousand dollars had just been approved for our Brooklyn apartment.
And according to the digital document, my forged signature was sitting right next to Jason's.
