Chapter 10 - The Warrant

I froze perfectly still in the dark, my heart slamming violently against my ribs.
The knock echoed again, louder and significantly more demanding than before.
I crept silently toward the heavy wooden door and peered through the small brass peephole.
It wasn't the menacing man in the dark suit who had cornered me in the alleyway.
Instead, two uniformed Italian police officers stood in the hallway, accompanied by a woman wearing a sharp gray blazer.
I took a deep breath, unlocked the deadbolt, and slowly opened the door.
“Mrs. Miller?” the woman in the blazer asked, her tone entirely devoid of warmth or hesitation.
“Yes, I am,” I replied, keeping my posture straight and my voice remarkably calm.
“My name is Agent Rossi, and I am working in coordination with Interpol and the American federal authorities.”
She didn't ask for permission to enter, and the two police officers immediately stepped into the room behind her.
I felt a sudden, triumphant surge of relief wash over my exhausted body.
My email to the IRS investigator must have triggered an immediate international alert.
They were here to take my official statement, gather my physical evidence, and finally build the criminal case against Jason and Mark.
I smiled softly and gestured toward the laptop sitting quietly on the desk.
“I assume you are here regarding the financial fraud documents I submitted to the authorities less than twenty minutes ago.”
Agent Rossi stared at me with an expression of complete, chilling absolute indifference.
“I have absolutely no knowledge of any documents you submitted tonight, Mrs. Miller.”
She reached into her sleek leather briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of official, red-stamped papers.
“I am here to execute an international provisional arrest warrant issued by the United States Department of Justice.”
The victorious smile instantly vanished from my face.
“An arrest warrant?” I whispered, the air suddenly completely vanishing from the room.
“There must be a massive mistake, because my husband is the one who forged the documents.”
Agent Rossi handed the heavy stack of papers directly into my trembling hands.
“According to sworn affidavits from your husband and the chief financial officer of Mark's firm, you were the sole architect of the entire embezzlement scheme.”
I stared down at the terrifying legal documents in sheer, unadulterated horror.
Jason hadn't just used the wedding as a cover to quietly launder the stolen money.
He had spent the last three years meticulously routing millions of dollars through shell accounts registered exclusively in my maiden name.
He didn't want my eighty-five thousand dollars to buy his way into the family business.
He needed me to drain the joint account and flee the country tonight so I would perfectly look like a guilty fugitive running with the stolen cash.
The man in the alleyway hadn't been sent to collect a debt.
He had been sent to ensure I panicked, transferred the money offshore, and triggered the federal tripwire Jason had carefully laid out for me.
“Mrs. Miller, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and international money laundering.”
May you like
Agent Rossi pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from her belt as the two officers stepped forward to grab my arms.
“And if you do not immediately surrender the location of the missing five million dollars, you will never see the outside of a prison cell again.”
