Chapter 4 - The Escape

The forged signature stared back at me from the glowing screen of my phone.

Four hundred thousand dollars of debt had just been permanently chained to my name.

Jason hadn't just planned to drain our joint savings to fund his sister's ridiculous wedding.

He had orchestrated a massive, fraudulent loan against the only property I had ever owned.

He was cashing out all the equity I had built over the last decade.

The sickening realization washed over me like freezing water.

He wasn't planning on coming back to Brooklyn to play the role of my husband ever again.

He was going to take the mortgage money, leave me with the staggering debt, and start a new life with the woman in the red dress.

I didn't have time to break down or cry.

I immediately called my private bank and locked my social security number with every major credit bureau.

I forwarded the fraudulent mortgage documents to a secure cloud server, ensuring Jason couldn't delete the evidence.

Then, I grabbed my suitcase and walked out the front door without looking back.

The taxi ride to JFK Airport felt like moving through a surreal, silent dream.

The neon lights of the city blurred through the rain-streaked window.

As I stepped into the international terminal, a profound sense of clarity washed over me.

I pulled out my phone and navigated to Jason's contact profile.

I pressed the block button, cutting off the main artery of his control over my life.

I blocked Carol, Jessica, and every single flying monkey in his toxic family tree.

As the plane finally taxied down the runway, New York began to disappear beneath a thick layer of clouds.

A strange, beautiful calm settled over my exhausted mind.

It was the profound peace that comes when a woman finally stops waiting for someone else to choose her, and firmly decides to choose herself.

I ordered a glass of red wine, leaned my head against the cold window, and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.

Nine hours later, the plane touched down on Italian soil.

I turned off airplane mode as we taxied toward the gate in Rome.

Immediately, a flurry of notifications flooded my screen.

Most of them were blocked call attempts hidden in my spam folder.

But one single voicemail had somehow slipped through my carrier's international filter.

It was from a number with a Charleston area code that I didn't recognize.

I put my headphones in and pressed play, expecting Jason's frantic voice.

Instead, a deep, unfamiliar man's voice echoed in my ears.

“I don't know who you are, but you need to know the truth about what happened today.”

May you like

“Jason isn't just hiding you from his family.”

“He is hiding his new fiancé from you, and he used your money to pay off the people she works for.”
