Chapter 8 - The Desperate Stand

The aggressive pounding on the front door echoed through the house like terrifying thunder.

I grabbed Noah’s hand and pulled him quietly into the hallway bathroom, locking the door behind us.

I told him to hide in the empty bathtub and stay perfectly silent, no matter what he heard outside.

I grabbed a heavy iron fireplace poker from the living room and crept slowly toward the front entrance.

The menacing voice shouted again, warning me that they had a legal right to break the door down if I refused to open it.

I looked through the small glass peephole and saw three massive men wearing dark suits and sunglasses.

One of the men was holding a heavy steel crowbar, preparing to smash the lock on my door.

I knew I could not fight off three professional enforcers with a simple iron fireplace tool.

I pulled out my cell phone and frantically dialed the emergency police dispatcher.

The operator answered immediately, asking for the nature of my emergency.

I whispered that three men from a criminal syndicate were currently trying to break into my home.

The operator asked for my address, but her voice sounded strangely calm and familiar.

It was the exact same voice of the woman who had testified as the child advocate in court today.

I realized with absolute horror that Julian’s corruption had infected the emergency dispatch center as well.

The operator casually told me that all police units were currently busy and it would take hours for anyone to arrive.

She ended the call abruptly, leaving me completely isolated and defenseless against the men outside.

The sound of shattering wood violently interrupted my panic as the crowbar smashed through the doorframe.

The heavy front door swung open, and the three men stepped into my living room, their shoes crunching on the broken wood.

I stood my ground in the hallway, raising the heavy iron poker defensively in front of me.

The lead enforcer laughed mockingly at my pathetic attempt to protect my home.

He pulled a folded legal document from his suit jacket and tossed it casually onto the floor.

"You have ten minutes to pack your bags and leave, Mrs. Vance," the man ordered coldly.

"This property legally belongs to the Petrov Syndicate as of this morning," he declared.

I stared at the men, my mind desperately searching for a way to stall their aggressive eviction.

I lowered the iron poker slightly and told them I just needed to get my son's medication from the kitchen.

The lead enforcer nodded once, granting me a small sliver of dangerous mercy.

I walked slowly into the kitchen, keeping my eyes fixed on the men waiting in the hallway.

I opened the hidden compartment behind the pantry shelves where I kept my emergency cash reserves.

Instead of stacks of money, I pulled out a sealed manila envelope containing my absolute last resort.

I walked back into the living room and tossed the envelope onto the coffee table in front of the enforcers.

"I know Julian owes you three million dollars," I said with perfect, icy calmness.

The men looked at the envelope with a mixture of curiosity and deep suspicion.

"That envelope contains the unencrypted routing numbers to Julian's secret cryptocurrency wallet," I revealed boldly.

"There is over ten million dollars sitting in that account right now, completely untraceable," I tempted them.

The lead enforcer picked up the envelope and tore it open, inspecting the complex digital keys printed on the paper.

He looked at me with a predatory smile, realizing this information was worth far more than the suburban house.

"You have a deal, Mrs. Vance," he said, signaling his men to leave the property.

As they turned to walk out the broken front door, the lead enforcer suddenly stopped and pulled a suppressed pistol from his jacket.

"Unfortunately, Julian paid us an extra million to make sure you never testify against him in criminal court," the enforcer smiled wickedly.
