Chapter 10 - The Unforeseen Threat

I walked over to the toy box and carefully pushed aside the pile of colorful building blocks.
The blinking red light was coming from a small, sophisticated GPS tracking device attached to the bottom of the bin.
I felt a sudden, terrifying chill wash over my body, but I quickly suppressed my panic so I would not frighten Noah.
I kissed his forehead, turned on his favorite nightlight, and quietly closed his bedroom door behind me.
The next morning, I drove straight to the FBI field office and handed the tracking device directly to Agent Thorne.
He assured me that Julian was locked away in a maximum-security federal facility with absolutely no access to the outside world.
He promised to sweep my house for any other hidden devices, but I finally felt confident that the worst was truly behind us.
A week later, the family court judge officially finalized my divorce and granted me absolute sole custody of Noah.
Julian was formally sentenced to thirty years in federal prison for racketeering, grand larceny, and attempted murder.
Eleanor was sentenced to five years for accessory to fraud and was permanently barred from contacting us.
I used the recovered funds to set up an impenetrable trust for Noah's future education and security.
I even restarted my forensic accounting firm, choosing to specialize in helping other women escape financial abuse.
Our life finally settled into a beautiful, peaceful routine filled with soccer games, quiet dinners, and endless laughter.
The dark memories of the courtroom and the terrifying home invasion slowly began to fade into the past.
We were safe, we were happy, and we were completely free to build the wonderful life we deserved.
It was a quiet Tuesday evening, and I was happily unpacking Noah's backpack after his first day at a new school.
I pulled out his colorful folders, his half-eaten lunchbox, and a strange, unmarked black envelope.
I frowned, assuming it was an invitation to a birthday party from one of his new classmates.
I slid my finger under the flap and pulled out a single, glossy photograph with a handwritten note attached to it.

The photograph showed me sleeping peacefully in my own bed, taken from inside my room just last night.
The note simply read: "Julian was just the middleman, and you still owe us for the favor, Mrs. Vance."
