Chapter 7 - The Hidden Syringe

The woman dispatcher cocked the hammer of her pistol with a sharp, metallic click.
She sneered and demanded that I hand over the glowing blue vial immediately.
She said Daniel had promised her a share of the stolen millions, and she was not risking it.
I gripped the glass vial tightly in my fist, calculating the distance between us.
Noah was breathing normally again, his eyes wide with fear as he watched her.
I slowly raised my empty left hand in a gesture of surrender.
I told her she could have the antidote, but she had to let my son go.
She laughed and said she was not in the business of leaving witnesses alive.
She took a confident step forward into the muddy hollow under the tree roots.
That was her fatal mistake.
The mud beneath her expensive boots instantly gave way, causing her to slip forward.
I did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.
I lunged forward and threw a handful of wet mud directly into her open eyes.
She screamed and fired the gun blindly, the bullet tearing through the bark above my head.
I grabbed the heavy branch next to me and swung it violently against her knees.
She collapsed into the mud, dropping the pistol into a deep puddle.
I uncorked the glass vial with my teeth and swallowed the bitter blue liquid in one gulp.
I grabbed Noah's hand, and we scrambled out of the ravine while she was still blinded.
A sudden rush of warmth flooded my veins as the antidote fought the neurotoxin.
My vision cleared instantly, and the terrifying pressure in my chest vanished.
We reached the top of the ridge and saw the woman's car parked near the dirt road.
Daniel's van was completely gone, meaning he had abandoned her to finish the job.
I threw open the driver's side door of her sedan and found the keys sitting in the cup holder.
I pushed Noah into the passenger seat and started the engine with a loud roar.
I slammed the gas pedal down, tearing away from the woods toward the city hospital.
May you like
I looked in the rearview mirror, finally feeling a shred of hope.
Then, a red engine light flashed on the dashboard, and the car rapidly began to lose speed.
