Chapter 3 - The Broken Mask

I stared at Noah in pure, unadulterated horror.
I desperately wiped the foam from his mouth using the sleeve of my shirt.
His breathing was incredibly shallow, sounding like a broken whistle in the dark.
I checked my own pulse and realized my heart was beating at a dangerously irregular rhythm.
The poison was inside me too, but my larger body mass was simply delaying the inevitable.
I knew we had less than an hour before our hearts stopped completely.
I carefully placed Noah’s head onto a soft bundle of moving blankets.
I felt around the dark floor of the van for anything I could use as a weapon.
My fingers brushed against a heavy, solid steel tire iron tucked near the wheel well.
I gripped the cold metal tightly, feeling a sudden surge of adrenaline.
The van abruptly swerved off the smooth highway and onto a bumpy dirt road.
Gravel crunched loudly beneath the heavy tires.
I crawled toward the metal partition separating the cargo area from the driver.
I raised the tire iron, preparing to smash the small glass window separating us.
The van suddenly slammed to a violent halt.
The engine cut off, leaving only the sound of crickets outside.
I pressed my back against the metal wall and raised the weapon above my head.
The heavy back doors groaned loudly as they were pulled open from the outside.
Moonlight flooded into the van, blinding me for a split second.
I swung the steel tire iron with every ounce of strength I had left in my body.
A massive hand shot out and caught my wrist in mid-air.
Daniel ripped the weapon from my grip and tossed it onto the dirt road.

He leaned into the van with a terrifyingly calm smile on his face.
He looked down at me and said he knew we were awake the entire time.
