Chapter 1 - The Cold Dinner

Camila Herrera stared quietly at the steaming plate of food she had just placed on the wooden dining table.
Her fingers were covered in tiny, painful pricks from spending the entire day working at her heavy sewing machine.
For ten long years, she had sacrificed every ounce of her own energy to maintain this flawless household.
She washed the endless piles of dishes, scrubbed the floors until they shined, and always waited for her husband with a warm smile.
Mauricio walked into the small dining room, loosening his stained work tie with an exhausted sigh.
He was a hardworking man, but the years had hardened him into someone arrogant and deeply unappreciative.
He sat down at the table and immediately pulled out his cell phone, his eyes glued to the glowing screen.
Camila sat across from him, her muscles aching as she waited for a simple thank you that she knew would never come.
Instead, Mauricio looked at the plate she had carefully prepared and pushed it away with a look of pure disgust.
He did not even bother to look up from his phone when he finally spoke in a dry, cutting tone.
"You're an adult, cook for yourself, I'm not your chef."
The cruel words hung in the quiet air of their small home in León, Guanajuato.
Camila did not scream, she did not cry, and she absolutely did not respond to his bitter provocation.
She simply got up slowly, untied her faded floral apron, and let it drop silently onto the back of her wooden chair.
She walked away from the dining table and went straight into their dark bedroom without looking back.
Mauricio scoffed quietly, assuming this was just another one of her temporary, emotional tantrums.
He ate a cold sandwich in the quiet kitchen, fully expecting her to apologize to him by the morning.
But when Camila entered the bedroom, she did not get into bed to cry herself to sleep.
She walked directly to the back of her closet and pulled up a loose wooden floorboard hidden beneath her old shoeboxes.
May you like
Beneath the floorboard sat a heavy, locked metal lockbox containing the secret savings she had been quietly accumulating for ten years.
She opened the box, grabbed the thick stacks of cash, and found a freshly signed commercial real estate lease hidden at the bottom.
