Chapter 8 - The Trap is Set

I stared blindly at the glossy legal documents sitting on the desk, feeling an overwhelming surge of pure, unfiltered rage.

Mr. Vance, a man my father had trusted with his life's work, was actively conspiring with my abusive husband to steal my entire fortune.

I slowly reached out with my left hand and picked up the expensive silver pen he had offered me.

"Are you absolutely sure this will protect the remaining funds from Ryan's creditors?" I asked, forcing my voice to sound terrified and completely naive.

Vance offered me a warm, paternal smile that made my stomach violently churn with disgust.

"I promise you, Elena, once you sign these authorizations, your money will be completely invisible to anyone trying to steal it."

I hovered the pen over the signature line, pretending to hesitate in fear.

"I just remembered something crucial, Mr. Vance," I said, putting the pen back down on the desk.

Vance's fake smile twitched slightly in annoyance, his eyes darting nervously toward the large office clock.

"What is it, Elena? We are incredibly short on time here."

"My father set up a tertiary ghost account in Switzerland that bypasses the primary estate ledger," I lied flawlessly.

"It holds an additional twenty million dollars in liquid cash, but it requires a physical biometric scan at the main bank branch to initiate the transfer."

Vance's eyes widened with uncontrollable greed, completely taking the bait I had just dangled in front of him.

He had no idea the Swiss account was entirely fabricated; he only saw a massive payday that he and Ryan had somehow missed.

"We must secure those funds immediately before the cartel discovers them," Vance insisted, standing up from his heavy leather chair.

"I will drive you to the main bank branch right now so we can consolidate everything under my protective umbrella."

Mr. Sterling looked at me with deep confusion, knowing perfectly well that my father had never mentioned a Swiss ghost account.

I gave my attorney a microscopic, reassuring nod, silently telling him to play along with the dangerous charade.

We followed Vance down to the underground parking garage, where he eagerly ushered us into his expensive luxury sedan.

During the short drive to the bank, I secretly texted the lead detective who had arrested Ryan earlier that evening.

"The executor is compromised and working with Ryan. Meet me at the First National Bank downtown right now."

When we arrived at the massive bank, Vance practically sprinted toward the private wealth management offices in the back.

He demanded that the bank manager bring out the biometric scanner to authorize the immediate transfer of the fictitious twenty million.

"Place your hand on the scanner, Elena," Vance ordered, completely dropping his polite facade in his frantic desperation for the money.

I stepped forward and casually placed my hand onto the glowing glass screen of the security device.

Instead of a green approval light, the machine flashed a violent, blinding red, and a loud security alarm echoed through the bank.

"What did you do?" Vance hissed, grabbing my shoulder roughly as the bank's security doors automatically locked down.

"I just flagged your executor credentials for federal fraud, Mr. Vance," I smiled coldly, stepping back from the machine.

Before Vance could even attempt to run, the glass doors of the manager's office were violently pushed open.

The two police detectives from earlier walked in with their weapons drawn, aiming directly at Vance's chest.

"Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny and wire fraud," the lead detective announced loudly.

Vance raised his hands in the air, but he let out a dark, chilling laugh that echoed off the marble walls.

"You think arresting me changes anything, Elena?" Vance mocked as the handcuffs clicked securely around his wrists.

"I already wired the cartel's money out of the country, and the real threat just posted bail ten minutes ago."
