Chapter 1 - The Shattered Bone

The blinding fluorescent lights of the emergency room hummed with a sterile and unforgiving intensity.
I sat on the edge of the examination table while cradling my shattered right arm tightly against my chest.
A sharp, nauseating wave of agony radiated from my elbow all the way up to my shoulder every time I took a shallow breath.
The attending doctor wrapped a heavy plaster cast around my swollen skin, his tired eyes filled with quiet suspicion.
"Are you absolutely certain you just tripped and fell down the stairs, Mrs. Sterling?" he asked in a soft, probing voice.
I looked down at the pristine white linoleum floor and slowly nodded my head.
"Yes, it was just a clumsy accident," I lied, my voice trembling with suppressed emotion.
My husband, Ryan, stood leaning casually against the hospital doorframe with his arms crossed over his chest.
He wore a look of fabricated concern, but his dark eyes burned with a silent, terrifying warning.
Just three hours earlier, we had been standing in the private study of our sprawling estate.
I had caught him logging into my secure banking portal on my personal laptop.
He was in the middle of executing a massive unauthorized wire transfer of 1.8 million dollars from our joint account.
When I demanded to know what he was doing, he casually admitted he was sending my money to rescue his sister Ashley's failing designer boutique.
I immediately reached over and slammed the laptop shut, blocking the transaction before it could process.
"You will never interfere with my family again," he had snarled, his face twisting into a mask of pure rage.
He grabbed my right arm, pinning it behind my back with brutal, unrelenting force.
He twisted my limb upward until a sickening, hollow crack echoed through the quiet study.
I collapsed onto the Persian rug in agonizing pain, gasping for air while he calmly straightened his expensive suit jacket.
Now, standing in the hospital room, he played the role of the devoted and worried husband to absolute perfection.
The doctor finally stepped back, handing me a prescription for heavy painkillers before leaving the room.
Ryan immediately walked over, invading my personal space until I could smell the expensive cologne on his neck.
"You did very well today, my sweet wife," he whispered, pressing a cruel kiss against my forehead.
"Keep playing along, and maybe I won't have to break the other one."
I kept my eyes fixed firmly on the floor, pretending to be a broken and submissive victim.
I let him believe that his violence had successfully terrified me into total obedience.
But as he turned around to grab my coat, I reached into my pocket with my good hand and felt the cold metal of a secure encrypted flash drive.

I hadn't just stopped the transfer before he broke my arm.
I had secretly downloaded the entire history of his hidden offshore banking transactions.
