Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I took a slow, deeply satisfying sip of my expensive red wine, letting the rich flavor calm my frayed nerves.
The sprawling estate was finally, completely quiet, save for the gentle patter of rain against the large bay windows.
The toxic in-laws who had made my life a living hell were entirely ruined and banished from my property forever.
The corrupt executor was sitting in a federal holding cell, and my father's massive fortune was completely locked down under my exclusive control.
My broken arm still throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, but the overwhelming sense of freedom was the best painkiller I could have asked for.
I walked into the grand living room and sat down on the plush velvet sofa, feeling completely untouchable in my fortress.
I had successfully outsmarted a violent husband, a greedy family, and a highly sophisticated financial conspiracy in a single evening.
I opened my laptop to review the finalized security logs, confirming that every single digital back door to my accounts had been permanently sealed.
The immediate nightmare was entirely over, and I was finally ready to start rebuilding my life on my own terms.
I closed my eyes and smiled, breathing in the scent of the fresh rain and the expensive mahogany furniture.
Then, my secure smartphone chimed loudly with a highly encrypted text message containing a single, unidentified audio file.
I frowned in confusion, picking up the device and pressing the play button on the dark screen.
The unmistakable, arrogant sound of Ryan's laughter filled the quiet living room, completely freezing the blood in my veins.
"You really thought the ten million dollars was for my gambling debt, didn't you, my sweet wife?" Ryan's recorded voice mocked smoothly.
"I didn't steal the money from the cartel, Elena; I stole it directly from the federal government, and I deposited it entirely into a ghost account registered under your name."
Before I could even drop the phone in absolute horror, the heavy oak front doors of my mansion were violently blown completely off their hinges.

A man wearing a heavy tactical suit walked calmly through the smoke and tossed a bloody file onto my coffee table containing my forged signature.
"Your husband just sold your entire identity to the cartel to pay off his debt, Mrs. Sterling, and we are here to collect our property."
