Chapter 2 - The Dinner Party

Three days after the hospital visit, the grand dining room of my estate was filled with the sounds of clinking crystal and arrogant laughter.

I sat completely silently at the head of the long mahogany table with my right arm locked securely in a dark medical sling.

A beautiful cut of roasted steak sat perfectly plated in front of me, but I couldn't even attempt to cut it.

I couldn't lift a heavy wine glass without a blinding shot of pain tearing through my fractured shoulder.

Yet, out of the five people sitting around the lavish table, not a single one offered to help me.

Instead, my mother-in-law, Margaret, stood up and proudly raised her expensive glass of merlot.

"I think we should propose a very special toast this evening," she announced, her voice dripping with venomous satisfaction.

She looked directly into my eyes, her lips curling into a cruel and mocking smile.

"My son finally taught you who is truly in charge of this household."

The dining room instantly filled with loud, obnoxious laughter.

My sister-in-law, Ashley, enthusiastically clapped her hands together across the table.

"I always knew she would eventually stop acting like she owned this place," Ashley giggled, taking a large sip of her champagne.

My husband, Ryan, calmly carved another thick slice of roast beef as if he hadn't shattered my bones just seventy-two hours earlier.

He chewed his food slowly, basking in the twisted adoration of his toxic family.

He genuinely believed that his brutal attack had permanently crushed my spirit and secured his dominance.

I looked up at the magnificent crystal chandelier glowing brightly above our heads.

My late father had personally traveled to Italy to choose that exact chandelier for me when he built this massive estate.

Every single antique chair in this room belonged to my family's legacy.

Every priceless painting hanging on the walls was purchased with my father's hard-earned wealth.

Every single inch of this ten-million-dollar mansion was legally and rightfully mine.

Not one of the arrogant parasites sitting at my table seemed to remember that minor detail.

I quietly slipped my left hand beneath the heavy silk tablecloth.

My smartphone was resting perfectly on my lap, its screen glowing faintly in the shadows.

The voice memo application was actively running, secretly recording every single word they said.

I was capturing every cruel threat, every arrogant confession, and every undeniable insult.

I took a deep breath, forcing a polite and subdued expression onto my face.

"Are you going to eat, or just sit there sulking?" Ryan snapped, pointing his silver carving knife at my plate.

"I am just taking it all in," I replied softly, my voice barely rising above a whisper.

May you like

Margaret scoffed loudly and dramatically rolled her eyes at her son.

"Well, you better get used to the new arrangements, because we have some very exciting news to share."
