Chapter 4 - The Syndicate Enforcer

The phone line went completely dead, leaving a suffocating, heavy silence inside the armored vehicle.

I collapsed into uncontrollable sobs, burying my face into my daughter's soft, pink hospital blanket.

I was completely ready to surrender to David if it meant saving my beautiful, innocent child from a painful death.

"I have to go back to him, Luka, I cannot let her die for a scientific secret," I wept desperately.

Luka stepped out of the vehicle and walked around to open my door, his expression harder than carved stone.

"You are not surrendering to that psychopath, Maya, because he has absolutely no intention of letting either of you live."

He led me into a brightly lit safe house equipped with advanced medical monitors and an entire wall of tactical weapons.

"David does not possess a completed stabilizer serum, he needs your daughter's bone marrow to manufacture it for himself."

I stared at Luka, feeling a sudden surge of protective, maternal rage override my paralyzing fear.

"Then how do we save her if the cure does not even exist yet?" I asked, my voice finally steadying.

Luka walked over to the weapon rack and began loading heavy, high-capacity magazines into a tactical rifle.

"Your father successfully synthesized the antidote three days ago, but David locked it inside the central laboratory vault."

Luka strapped a heavy Kevlar vest across his broad chest, his dark tattoos shifting with his powerful movements.

"We are going to break into the most heavily guarded medical facility in the country, and we are going to steal it back."

I gently placed my sleeping daughter into a secure, padded travel carrier, zipping my jacket tightly over her.

"I am coming with you, because I will never let her out of my sight again," I declared fiercely.

Luka offered a grim, respectful smile, tossing me a compact, loaded pistol.

We drove silently back into the heart of the city, preparing to wage an absolute war against my ex-husband.

But as we approached the glowing glass skyscraper of David's corporate headquarters, a terrifying thought crossed my mind.

If my father had been a prisoner for five years, how did Luka manage to secure a job as his personal protector?
