Chapter 9 - The Arrest

The hospital room descended into absolute, deafening chaos as the federal agents swarmed the space.

Silas reached instinctively for a concealed weapon in his jacket, but three agents tackled him brutally to the floor.

They pinned the violent loan shark against the cold linoleum, violently securing his wrists in heavy steel handcuffs.

Mom screamed hysterically, backing up against my grandfather's bed in pure, unadulterated panic.

"This is a massive mistake!" she shrieked as a female agent aggressively forced her arms behind her back.

"You have the right to remain silent, Patricia," the lead agent announced, reading her Miranda rights loudly over her protests.

I stood perfectly still in the corner of the room, watching the woman who had tormented me finally lose everything.

Ava suddenly burst into the hospital room, completely completely unaware of the federal sting operation.

She froze in the doorway, staring at her mother in handcuffs and the terrifying federal agents holding assault rifles.

"Ava Sterling, you are under arrest for federal identity theft and wire fraud," an agent declared, grabbing my sister's arm.

Ava burst into pathetic, hyperventilating tears, begging our mother to tell them it was all a misunderstanding.

Mom completely ignored her golden child, glaring at me with eyes full of poisonous, bitter hatred as they dragged her away.

The room suddenly went completely quiet, leaving only the rhythmic beeping of my grandfather's heart monitor.

The lead agent thanked me for my incredible bravery and assured me my name would be entirely cleared of all debt.

I sat down in the plastic chair next to the hospital bed, finally allowing the heavy, exhausting tears to fall from my eyes.

I held my grandfather's hand for three days without ever leaving his side, praying he would wake up.

On the morning of the fourth day, his fingers twitched weakly against my palm.

I looked up just in time to see his sharp, familiar eyes slowly flutter open.

"You did beautifully, Amelia," he rasped quietly through the oxygen mask.

The doctors rushed in, confirming that he had survived the severe heart attack and would make a full recovery.

My nightmare was finally, completely over, and the people who hurt us were locked away in federal prison.

I walked out of the hospital that afternoon, breathing the fresh, crisp Carolina air for the first time in weeks.
