Chapter 7 - The Mastermind

I stared at the loaded handgun and the ominous note in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.
I carefully picked up the black USB drive and plugged it into the secure viewing computer provided in the private room.
A single video file appeared on the screen, dated exactly three weeks ago.
I clicked play, and my grandfather's tired, somber face filled the glowing monitor.
"Amelia, I have suspected for months that your mother was stealing from the family trust," Grandpa explained in the video.
He revealed that he had hired private investigators to audit my mother's extensive financial records.
The truth was far more horrifying than simple embezzlement.
Mom had partnered with Silas a year ago, orchestrating massive, illegal money laundering operations through our estate.
Ava was never the victim of a loan shark; she was just a foolish, incredibly naive pawn in Mom's elaborate scheme.
"Your mother deliberately gave Ava your car and your identity to frame you," Grandpa stated firmly.
Mom wanted me to go to federal prison so she would become the sole remaining heir to the entire fortune.
The video ended with Grandpa listing the exact offshore account numbers where Mom and Silas were hiding the stolen money.
My entire life had been a carefully constructed, deeply cruel lie designed to ruin me.
I pulled the USB drive from the computer, my grief rapidly transforming into a cold, unbreakable rage.
I placed the drive in my pocket, completely ignoring the heavy handgun in the box.
I did not need violence to destroy them; I had all the undeniable proof the federal authorities would ever need.
I left the bank and walked directly to the local FBI field office situated three blocks away.
I spent four hours sitting in an interrogation room, laying out the entire criminal conspiracy to a team of federal agents.
They verified the offshore accounts immediately, confirming the massive scope of the money laundering ring.
"We need to catch them attempting to finalize the transfer of the estate deed to make the charges stick," the lead agent explained.
I agreed to wear a hidden wire and act as the bait for the federal sting operation.

I walked back into the hospital waiting room, fully prepared to confront the monsters who destroyed my family.
Mom and Silas were standing near the intensive care unit, hovering over my grandfather's bed.
