Chapter 2 - The Audio Confession

The recording continued to play, paralyzing everyone in the room with absolute terror.
"If you don't bring the deed, your pretty face is going to require extensive surgery," the deep voice threatened.
The audio file ended with the sound of a heavy car door slamming shut.
Grandpa folded his hands on the desk, his knuckles turning entirely white.
"Who is that man, Ava?" he demanded, his voice shaking with pure rage.
Ava burst into hysterical tears, burying her face in her hands.
Mom stepped forward, completely abandoning her usual composed demeanor.
"It isn't her fault, Dad, she just made a small mistake with some investments," Mom cried.
Grandpa slammed his fist against the heavy oak desk, making all of us flinch.
"A small mistake does not involve bargaining away my family estate to a violent criminal!" he roared.
I stood in the corner, staring at the mother and sister who had treated me like garbage for years.
They had essentially stolen my birthday present to use as collateral in a criminal underworld transaction.
"I owe half a million dollars to a man named Silas," Ava confessed between loud sobs.
She admitted that she had been posing as a wealthy real estate developer to impress her superficial friends online.
When her credit cards maxed out, she borrowed money from a dangerous local loan shark.
Silas had demanded immediate repayment, and Ava had been driving my SUV to his warehouse to beg for more time.
"I told Silas you were wealthy and that I could get him the deed to the property," Ava whimpered.
Grandpa looked at my mother with absolute, unfiltered disgust.
"And you knew about this?" he asked her directly.
Mom looked down at the floor, unable to deny her involvement.
"I took Amelia's keys because Silas told Ava he needed a luxury vehicle as a down payment," Mom admitted softly.

My own mother had sacrificed my safety and my property to cover up my sister's massive, illegal debt.
Suddenly, a deafening crash echoed from the front of the house, followed by the sound of shattering glass.
