Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

I pushed the heavy door to the intensive care unit open, stepping boldly into the sterile room.

Grandpa was still unconscious, hooked up to a dozen beeping machines and a ventilator.

Mom turned around, her face twisting into a mask of pure, vicious hatred when she saw me.

Silas stood casually in the corner, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his tailored suit.

"Where have you been, Amelia?" Mom demanded, her voice dripping with fake concern.

"I went to the bank to get Grandpa's safety deposit box," I answered smoothly, playing my part perfectly.

Mom's eyes lit up with unadulterated greed, completely abandoning the illusion of a grieving daughter.

"Did you bring the bearer bonds to pay off Silas?" she asked eagerly.

I reached into my jacket pocket and pulled out a stack of blank, folded papers wrapped in a rubber band.

"I have the payment right here," I lied, keeping a firm grip on the decoy package.

Silas stepped forward, holding out his hand to collect the final piece of his criminal puzzle.

"Hand it over, Amelia, and we will completely erase the loan in your name," Silas promised smoothly.

I took a deliberate step backward, holding the fake money away from his outstretched hand.

"I want you to admit on record that my mother orchestrated this entire identity theft scheme," I demanded loudly.

Mom laughed, a cruel, echoing sound that bounced off the sterile hospital walls.

"It doesn't matter what you know, Amelia, because nobody will ever believe the jealous, difficult sister," Mom sneered arrogantly.

She proudly bragged about exactly how she forged the notary signatures and manipulated Ava into taking the fall.

"I built a perfect financial empire with Silas, and you are just the collateral damage," she confessed willingly.

I smiled a cold, victorious smile, knowing the federal agents were listening to every single word through my hidden wire.

"You are absolutely right, Mom," I said softly, dropping the fake papers onto the floor.

"Nobody would ever believe me."

Before Silas could react to my sudden confidence, the hospital room door was violently kicked open.

"FBI! Nobody move!" a dozen heavily armed tactical agents screamed, flooding the tiny room.
