Chapter 9 - The Trap is Set

The drive to Sarah’s apartment complex was a terrifying blur of speed and adrenaline.

My father drove his truck entirely recklessly, running two red lights while Denise coordinated with the local police on her phone.

"They are three minutes out," Denise yelled over the roar of the engine.

I prayed we wouldn't be too late to save the girl who had risked everything for me.

We screeched into the parking lot just as a police cruiser blocked the main exit.

I jumped out of the truck before it had fully stopped, sprinting toward Sarah's ground-floor unit.

The heavy wooden door had been splintered open, hanging precariously off its hinges.

"Sarah!" I screamed, rushing into the chaotic living room.

The apartment was empty, and the furniture had been violently overturned.

My stomach plummeted as I saw Sarah's shattered cell phone lying on the kitchen floor.

Derek had gotten to her, and he had destroyed the only piece of concrete evidence we had.

The police officers rushed in behind us, securing the perimeter and calling for backup.

My father put a heavy hand on my shoulder, his face grim.

"He's tying up loose ends, Claire," he whispered.

Monday morning arrived with a suffocating sense of finality.

The courtroom was packed with spectators, reporters, and pharmaceutical representatives eager to see my downfall.

Derek sat at the plaintiff's table, looking the picture of a concerned, grieving father.

Patricia sat right behind him, holding a tissue to her eye and looking pitiful.

"All rise," the bailiff commanded as Judge Harrison entered the room.

The hearing to permanently terminate my parental rights and finalize the asset seizure began immediately.

Derek's lawyer presented the fraudulent loan documents, the fake life insurance motive, and the pharmacy vault footage.

It was a devastatingly effective narrative that painted me as a desperate, addicted monster.

"Does the defense have anything to present before I rule?" Judge Harrison asked, looking at me with clear disgust.

Denise stood up slowly, smoothing her tailored skirt.

"Your Honor, we call a surprise witness to the stand," Denise announced confidently.

Derek laughed softly, leaning back in his chair.

The heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

Derek’s smug smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of absolute, unadulterated terror.
