Chapter 1 - The Hidden Accounts

The drive to my father’s house was a blur of neon streetlights and silent tears.
Lily had fallen asleep in the backseat, clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest.
My father, Richard, kept both hands firmly on the steering wheel, his jaw clenched in quiet anger.
He did not ask me why I had stayed with Derek for so long, and I was grateful for his silence.
When we finally carried my sleeping daughter into the guest bedroom, a heavy wave of exhaustion washed over me.
I walked into the kitchen to find my father already sitting at the table with his reading glasses on.
His laptop was open, and he had a legal pad filled with frantic notes.
"Claire, sit down," he said, his voice unusually gentle.
I pulled out a chair, my hands trembling as I anticipated the worst.
"I had Denise run a preliminary background check on your joint finances using your social security number," he explained.
I swallowed hard, remembering Derek's final threat on the porch.
"He said I wouldn't have a dollar left by Monday," I whispered.
My father turned the laptop screen toward me, revealing a credit report I had never seen before.
"He wasn't lying about the money, Claire."
I stared at the screen, my heart pounding against my ribs.
There were four massive personal loans taken out in my name over the last six months.
"They total nearly eighty thousand dollars," my father said quietly.
"Derek and his mother have been draining these funds into an offshore account."
I felt physically sick, realizing the man I married had been plotting my financial ruin for almost a year.
Before I could even process the betrayal, my cell phone vibrated violently on the table.
