Chapter 5 - The Darkness

I pressed my back against the kitchen cabinets, trying to control my ragged breathing.
Derek stood in the doorway, a menacing silhouette blocking my only exit to the stairs where my daughter slept.
"Derek, you need to leave right now," my father warned, his voice remarkably calm despite the darkness.
"Or what, Richard?" Derek mocked, taking a slow step into the kitchen.
"You're an old man with a frying pan, and I have a lot of money on the line."
I could hear Patricia moving in the living room behind him, proving that her injuries were entirely superficial.
"You're insane if you think you can get away with this," I told him, edging toward the knife block.
Derek let out a dark, humorless laugh.
"Get away with what, Claire?"
"A tragic burglary gone wrong where a brave husband arrived just too late to save his wife?" he taunted.
He explained his plan with terrifying precision, revealing how he had mapped out the police response times.
He was going to kill my father and me, and Patricia was going to testify that an unknown intruder did it.
"Lily will be an orphan, and my mother will be her wealthy guardian," Derek finished coldly.
My hand finally brushed against the cold steel handle of a carving knife.
"I will die before I let you touch my daughter," I snarled, pulling the blade from the block.
Suddenly, blinding red and blue lights illuminated the kitchen through the large bay windows.
The wail of multiple police sirens shattered the silence of the neighborhood.
Derek froze, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade.
"You called them?" he hissed, turning violently toward Patricia.
"I didn't do anything!" she shrieked, backing away from the flashing lights.
The front door burst open as heavily armed SWAT officers flooded into the foyer.
"Get on the ground!" a booming voice commanded over a megaphone.
Derek dropped to his knees, but he looked up at me with a terrifying, confident smile.
"You think they're here for me, Claire?" he whispered as the officers stormed the kitchen.

An officer aimed his weapon directly at my chest.
"Claire Bennett, you are under arrest for the grand theft of highly controlled narcotics."
