Chapter 6 - The Midnight Sabotage

Stripped of his public support and facing total financial ruin, Arthur resorted to pure, unfiltered criminality.

It was 2:00 AM. A heavy rainstorm was battering the roof of the farmhouse. I was awake, sitting in the dark kitchen with a cup of black coffee, my military instincts keeping me on edge.

Through the pouring rain, I saw the headlights of a heavy-duty flatbed truck cutting down the private dirt road toward the cider mill. I didn't wake Sarah. I slipped into my boots, grabbed a heavy iron wrench from the mudroom, and stepped out into the storm.

Two men in dark clothes were unloading a massive commercial woodchipper and chainsaws. They weren't here to build; they were here to destroy. If the orchard and the historical cider mill were leveled, the federal conservation easement might be voided, opening the land up for commercial zoning anyway.

I moved through the apple trees, silent as a ghost, using the shadows just as I had been trained.

The first man fired up a chainsaw and walked toward the 150-year-old weeping willow.

I didn't give him a chance. I stepped out from behind the trunk, grabbed the back of his jacket, and drove my knee into his ribs. He dropped the saw with a yell, crumbling to the mud.

The second man turned, pulling a crowbar from his belt. He swung wildly. I ducked underneath the heavy iron, drove my shoulder into his chest, and slammed him against the steel side of the flatbed truck. The impact knocked the wind out of him, and he slid to the ground, gasping for air.

I picked up the crowbar and stood over them, the rain washing the mud from my face.

“Call him,” I ordered, tossing a cell phone onto the wet grass in front of the conscious man. “Tell Arthur Vance his demolition crew just resigned.”
