Chapter 3 - The Counter-Strike

Monday morning, I sat in the sleek downtown office of Elias Thorne. Elias wasn't just a real estate attorney; he was a former Marine JAG officer who made his living dismantling corrupt developers.

I laid the forged Power of Attorney and the Irrevocable Trust on his mahogany desk.

Elias reviewed the documents, a predatory smile slowly spreading across his face. “Arthur Vance made two fatal errors, Mark. First, he underestimated your father’s foresight. By placing the land in an Irrevocable Trust, your father made it legally impossible for anyone but you to authorize a sale. The deed Arthur filed with the county is entirely fraudulent.”

“And the second error?” Sarah asked, her voice steadying.

“He committed wire fraud against an active-duty military member,” Elias said, his eyes glinting with danger. “The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) offers massive federal protections against this exact type of financial exploitation. Arthur didn't just break state law; he invited the Department of Justice to his front door.”

Elias drafted an emergency injunction to permanently halt the Vance Lakeview Townhomes project. But we didn't stop there. Elias filed a federal lawsuit against Arthur’s development company for fraud, emotional distress, and theft by deception.

When the courier served Arthur with the federal lawsuit at his country club the next day, a mutual friend texted Sarah the details. Arthur had thrown his gin martini against the clubhouse wall, screaming obscenities before security asked him to leave.

The war had officially begun, and Arthur was already bleeding.
