Chapter 2 - The Forgery

The heavy silence of the farmhouse settled around Sarah and me after Arthur’s Mercedes tore out of the driveway. Sarah sat at the kitchen table, her head in her hands, trembling violently.
“He told me we were losing it, Mark,” she sobbed, the truth finally spilling out. “While you were deployed, the bank notices started coming. They said you had defaulted on loans. My dad stepped in. He said he would use the Power of Attorney you signed to sell the orchard to a developer, clear your debts, and save us from bankruptcy. I thought he was saving us.”
I sat across from her and gently took her hands. “I don't have any debts, Sarah. The orchard was fully paid off by my grandfather forty years ago. I left us with eighty thousand dollars in a joint savings account.”
Sarah looked up, her eyes wide with horror. “But... the bank statements he showed me. They were completely drained.”
“Because he drained them,” I realized, a cold fury settling into my bones.
I pulled my military laptop from my sea bag and logged into my encrypted banking portal. I turned the screen toward her. The money was there, completely untouched, in a high-yield account I had set up before I shipped out.
“The statements he showed you were fabricated to make you panic,” I explained. “He needed you to believe we were ruined so you wouldn't fight the sale of the land. But how did he get the Power of Attorney? I explicitly refused to sign one over to him.”
Sarah’s breath hitched. “The deployment deployment insurance papers... You signed them on the hood of his car the day you left. He took them to the notary at his office to file them.”
I closed the laptop, the reality of the betrayal crystalizing. Arthur hadn't just manipulated his daughter. He had slipped a broad financial Power of Attorney into a stack of routine military deployment forms, relying on my rush to deploy to get my signature. It wasn't just fraud; it was an attack on a deployed serviceman.
“Get your coat, Sarah,” I said, grabbing my keys.

“Where are we going?”
“To a lawyer. We’re going to burn his empire to the ground.”
