Chapter 5 - The Town Hall Ambush

Realizing he was losing the legal battle, Arthur pivoted to the court of public opinion. He utilized his connections with the local mayor to call an emergency town hall meeting, intending to paint me as the villain.

The high school gymnasium was packed. Arthur stood at the podium, looking grave and deeply concerned for the community.

“We have a housing crisis,” Arthur proclaimed into the microphone, gesturing to the crowd. “The Lakeview Townhomes project would bring jobs, tax revenue, and affordable housing to our town. But it is being blocked by a single, selfish landowner who believes that a few rotting apple trees are more important than the future of this community!”

The crowd began to murmur in agreement. Arthur’s paid cronies clapped loudly.

I stood up from the back row and walked calmly down the center aisle. I didn't yell. I didn't look angry. I held a flash drive.

“May I use the projector, Mayor?” I asked.

Before the mayor could deny me, Elias plugged the drive into the laptop on the side table. The massive screen behind Arthur lit up.

It wasn't a picture of affordable housing. It was a leaked internal memo from Arthur’s company.

“Affordable housing?” I echoed into the silent gymnasium. “According to your own prospectus, Arthur, the townhomes were slated to start at $800,000. But that doesn't matter, because you never intended to build them.”

I clicked the remote. The screen changed to the financial records showing his ten-million-dollar debt to the shadow lenders.

“You were using this town, and this project, to steal my family's land to pay off your gambling debts disguised as bad investments,” I announced clearly. “You forged my signature while I was deployed in a combat zone. You lied to your own daughter.”

The gymnasium erupted. The townsfolk, who despised being played for fools by wealthy developers, turned on Arthur instantly. Boos and shouts of outrage echoed off the bleachers. Arthur’s face turned purple, his political capital evaporating in under sixty seconds.
