Chapter 8 - The Betrayal

The sound of heavy tires spinning in the mud echoed loudly from the cabin's driveway.

Michael’s luxury SUV smashed through the wooden gate and skidded to a halt near the porch.

He kicked open the front door of the cabin, completely drenched in rain and holding his gun.

"Give me the baby, Dad, or I swear I will shoot you," Michael screamed, pointing the weapon at his own father.

David laughed a cruel, booming laugh that completely lacked any parental warmth.

"You don't have the guts to pull the trigger, you pathetic disappointment," David mocked him relentlessly.

A violent, screaming argument erupted between the two men, fully distracting them from the surrounding danger.

I saw my opportunity and slipped away from the FBI agents, sneaking around to the back door of the cabin.

I picked the simple lock with a hairpin, a trick I had learned purely by accident in college.

I crawled on my hands and knees across the hardwood floor, enduring a level of physical agony I never thought possible.

The men were too busy tearing each other apart to notice me inching closer to the bassinet.

I finally reached the wooden cradle and saw my beautiful son sleeping peacefully amidst the chaotic shouting.

I carefully scooped him into my arms, pressing his warm, tiny body tightly against my chest.

He let out a soft, tiny whimper as I moved him, the sound barely audible over the storm.

But it was enough.

Both men instantly stopped shouting and turned to look directly at me.

"Put the boy down, Emily," Michael commanded, his eyes wild and completely unhinged.

He lunged across the room toward me, his hands outstretched like a desperate animal.

I curled my body around my son, fully preparing to take the impact of his violent assault.

Suddenly, a deafening gunshot rang out inside the small, enclosed cabin.

The smell of gunpowder instantly filled the room, choking my lungs and stinging my eyes.

I opened my eyes and saw Michael collapse heavily onto the hardwood floor, clutching his bleeding chest.

He looked up in absolute shock and disbelief at the person who had just shot him.

David stood over his bleeding son, holding a smoking revolver with a completely emotionless expression.
