Chapter 6 - The Backup Plan

I stared at the shattered pieces of my phone, my blood running completely cold in my veins.

The Chief of Police was firmly planted in David’s deep, corrupt pockets.

"You are going to arrest her for trespassing and property damage," the Chief ordered a nearby officer.

Ms. Vance slammed her briefcase onto the desk, her eyes blazing with furious indignation.

"If you lay a hand on my client, I will personally see you indicted on federal corruption charges," she threatened.

The Chief scoffed, crossing his arms and leaning back in his expensive leather chair.

"You have no proof of anything, counselor," he mocked us blatantly.

Sarah suddenly smiled, pulling her own phone out of her pocket and waving it in the air.

"Emily's phone is linked to my cloud account, and everything syncs automatically in real-time," Sarah revealed triumphantly.

The Chief's arrogant smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated panic.

"We are leaving now, and you are not going to stop us," Ms. Vance commanded.

We backed out of the office, keeping a close eye on the corrupt officers who dared not make a move.

Once we were safely inside the car, Ms. Vance made a direct call to the regional director of the FBI.

Because the trust fund involved interstate banking and wire fraud, the federal authorities had full jurisdiction over the case.

The FBI director listened to the audio recording and immediately mobilized a federal strike team.

"We tracked David's private jet to a small airfield outside the city limits," the FBI agent reported over the phone.

David was planning to flee the country with my newborn son before the scandal broke.

We raced toward the private runway, a convoy of unmarked federal vehicles following closely behind us.

I ignored the agonizing pain in my abdomen, fueled entirely by a fierce, maternal adrenaline.

We smashed through the airfield gates just as the engines of David's luxurious jet began to whine.

FBI agents poured out of their vehicles, heavily armed and demanding the aircraft kill its engines immediately.

The pilot quickly complied, realizing he was surrounded by dozens of federal agents.

I sprinted up the boarding stairs, completely ignoring the agents who tried to hold me back for my own safety.

I burst into the luxurious cabin, ready to tear David apart with my bare hands.

The cabin was completely empty, save for a terrified flight attendant hiding behind a leather chair.

"Where is my son?" I screamed at her, my voice echoing in the hollow plane.

She pointed a shaking finger toward the window.

"Mr. David never got on the plane, he just paid me to sit here and wait," she confessed.
