Chapter 9 - The Porch

It was a Sunday morning. The California sun was warm. Harrison was in Maya’s kitchen, flipping pancakes. Leo and Finn were wrestling on the living room rug, while Lily sat on the counter, helping Harrison stir the batter.

Maya stood in the doorway, watching them. The scent of vanilla and coffee filled the air.

Harrison looked up, caught her gaze, and smiled. It was the same real, unpracticed smile he had given her in the college library all those years ago.

"What?" he asked, wiping flour from his forehead.

"Nothing," Maya said, walking over and wrapping her arms around his waist from behind, resting her cheek against his back. "Just enjoying the view."

Harrison turned around and pulled her in, kissing the top of her head. "I love you," he murmured. "I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you."

"You already have," she whispered.
