Chapter 4 - Chloe’s Desperation

The media caught wind of the scandal. "THE HEIRESS, THE HUSBAND, AND THE HIT" screamed the headlines. Facebook and TikTok were flooded with true-crime creators dissecting every detail of our lives.
Chloe was out on bail, her wealthy parents having mortgaged their home to secure a high-powered defense attorney.
She showed up at the estate gates on a rainy Tuesday, screaming at the intercom.
"Elena! Let me in! We need to talk!"
I walked down the long, winding driveway under an umbrella, stopping just behind the wrought-iron gates. Chloe looked haggard. Her designer clothes were wrinkled, her makeup smudged. The arrogant woman who had threatened my orchids was gone.
"Marcus is throwing me under the bus!" she cried, gripping the wet metal bars. "His lawyers are saying I acted alone. That I was a crazy, obsessed mistress who killed your mother out of jealousy! You have to give me the rest of the vault recordings. I know there's more!"
"Why would I help you, Chloe?"

"Because if you don't, Marcus gets away with it! He has the judge in his pocket!"
I smiled—a cold, calculated smile I had inherited from Mom. "Let him try. You both dug your own graves. Now you get to fight over who gets thrown in first."
