Chapter 1 - The Audio That Ruined Everything

The silence that fell over the driveway was absolute. It was the kind of heavy, suffocating quiet that precedes a hurricane.
Marcus stood frozen, his hand still clutching the fake will in the air, though it now looked more like a white flag of surrender. Chloe’s smug smile had melted into a mask of pure horror.
"What did you just say?" Marcus whispered, the color completely draining from his perfectly tanned face.
The tall, dark-haired stranger didn’t flinch. He pressed a button on the micro-recorder.
“If the old woman doesn't sign, we make sure she stops breathing before morning.”
The voice echoing from the tiny speaker belonged unmistakably to Marcus.
“Just make sure Julian keeps her distracted while I swap the valves on the oxygen tank,” a second voice replied—Chloe’s.
Julian, standing a few feet away from me in the greenhouse, dropped to his knees in the dirt. He clamped his hands over his ears, sobbing. "I didn't know they were actually going to do it, Elena! I swear to God, I just thought we were scaring her into signing the estate over!"
"You killed our mother," I said, my voice eerily calm. The rage inside me was so pure, so absolute, it felt like ice in my veins.
"Elena, please!" Marcus took a step toward me, tossing the forged will onto the gravel. His charming, manipulative facade was crumbling. "This is a misunderstanding. This man—whoever he is—he faked that audio using AI! You know how easy that is nowadays!"

Mom's lawyer, Mr. Vance, adjusted his glasses and looked at Marcus with utter disgust. "Actually, Marcus, this man is Detective Rayner. Private investigator. Your late mother hired him three months before she died."
Sirens wailed in the distance. The sound grew louder, echoing through the sprawling hills of the estate. The police were already on their way. Mom had always been ten steps ahead of everyone.
