Marcus collapsed onto the damp stone floor, his limbs twitching as the temporary paralysis set in. He couldn't move. He could barely breathe. The lighter slipped from his fingers and landed harmlessly in a puddle of water.

I stood over him, watching the sheer terror in his eyes.

"This is exactly how she felt, Marcus," I whispered. "Gasping for air. Helpless. Knowing the person she trusted was watching her die."

I didn't let him die, though. Mom wouldn't have wanted that. She would have wanted him to suffer in a cage.

I calmly pulled out my phone and dialed 911. "Yes, my ex-husband has broken into my home and attempted arson. He seems to have injured himself."

Three months later.

Marcus and Chloe were both sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Julian took a plea deal for his involvement and received fifteen years.

The estate was entirely mine. I spent the morning in the greenhouse, carefully repotting the mother plant into a beautiful new ceramic vessel. The toxic roots were safely buried deep beneath the rich, dark soil.

Above them, a new cluster of blue orchids was beginning to bloom, their petals catching the morning sunlight. They were more beautiful, more vibrant than ever before.

I touched a soft blue petal, smiling.

"We won, Mom," I whispered into the quiet, humid air. "The orchids are safe."
